Staying True to the Classical Pilates Method While Finding Our Own Way
At The Pilates Center of Boulder, we’ve spent years refining our approach to teaching Pilates, and one thing has become clear: we don’t fit neatly into either the Classical or Contemporary categories. Instead, we’ve forged our own path, embracing the timeless principles of Pilates while staying true to our vision of teaching the original Pilates method to empower people to transform their health and Return to Life.
Our Classical Pilates Roots and Evolving Beyond Choreography
When Amy Taylor Alpers & Rachel Taylor Segel first began their journey in Pilates, they only knew the Classical method, rooted in Joseph Pilates’ original teachings, taught by Romana Kryzanowska. They admired the precision and integrity of the exercises but, over time, realized that strictly adhering to the choreography sometimes missed the mark when it came to addressing individual needs.
Our approach evolved from this realization. While we honor and use the classical Pilates method, we also recognize that each person’s body tells a unique story. We’re not just teaching exercises—we’re teaching people. Our focus is on Pilates’s deeper goal: to empower individuals to return to life with strength, balance, and resilience. This means moving beyond the choreography to focus on Pilates’ transformative and muscular power the work provides.
Teaching People, Not Just Exercises
Unlike the traditional open gym scenarios in New York City, where Amy and Rachel first experienced Classical Pilates, where instructors offered general guidance without truly focusing on the individual. At The Pilates Center, we offer private lessons and small group classes, allowing us to tailor our instruction to each person’s specific needs. Whether it’s addressing scoliosis, an old injury, or simply finding a more balanced way to stand, we’re committed to helping our clients achieve true transformation.
This personalized, humanistic approach is what sets us apart. We’re not just following a script or sticking rigidly to choreography—we’re observing, listening, and responding to the unique needs of every individual who walks through our doors. It’s about more than just fitness; it’s about fostering a deeper connection to your body, mind, and spirit to return to a more uniform, developed life.
Shaping the Next Generation of Pilates Teachers
Our commitment to this unique approach extends to our Teacher Training Programs, which have been shaping skilled instructors for over 30 years. Our training is grounded in Classical Pilates principles, learned from Romana Kryzanowska’s teachings, but it also incorporates a pedagogical focus on communication and individualized care.
We teach our students how to connect with their clients, address all body types, and emphasize health, healing, and transformation. This humanistic approach helps our trainees become more confident, empowered, and mindful instructors, capable of making a significant impact in their clients’ lives.
