How to Begin Classical Pilates Classes at The Pilates Center

A Beginner’s Guide from The Pilates Center in Boulder

At The Pilates Center, we hear one question more than almost any other: “What is the best type of Pilates class to start with? Reformer, Mat, Tower, Chair or a mixed equipment class?”

Fortunately, the answer is simple. As long as you do not have physical limitations, you can begin with any of our beginner-level classes. Classical Pilates was designed as a complete system rather than a single apparatus, and each piece teaches the same foundational principles in a unique way. Because of this, your first step is less about choosing the perfect class and more about entering the work with curiosity, support and guidance.

Below is how our teaching community considers the best starting point for beginners.

Starting Pilates at TPC: What New Clients Should Know

Every beginner arrives with a different story. Some people feel immediately at ease in their bodies, while others need time to reconnect. In addition, some learners feel more confident with structure, whereas others prefer additional support as they settle into movement. Many are returning from injuries or managing limitations.

Because of this wide range of experiences, our teachers take these factors into account and guide each person into the most appropriate beginner-level class. As a result, new clients feel supported, prepared and confident from the very beginning.

How Beginners Respond to Different Apparatus

Classical Pilates functions as a method, not a collection of isolated workouts. Consequently, each apparatus helps beginners learn in a slightly different way.

Mat and Reformer

Mat and Reformer follow clear, intentional orders. This structure often helps beginners feel grounded as they learn the choreography and principles. Because the sequences repeat and build over time, many clients experience early “aha” moments when they recognize emerging patterns, rhythm and flow.

Tower

The Tower provides stability and guidance. The springs support the body and encourage correct pathways, which is especially helpful for beginners who feel more secure when the equipment offers tactile feedback. As a result, many new clients find Tower classes both clarifying and confidence-building.

Chair

Chair work is accessible to beginners, yet it asks for balance, clarity and control. Although it does not have a formal order, it strengthens fundamental skills and highlights uniform development. Some beginners enjoy this challenge right away, while others benefit from first learning the structure of Mat or Reformer.

Ultimately, there is no single correct place to begin. Each apparatus offers something valuable, and every person learns differently.

How Classical Pilates at TPC Approaches New Students

Many contemporary studios place beginners directly into Reformer-only classes. However, at The Pilates Center, our approach is rooted in Classical Pilates as passed down through Joseph Pilates, Romana Kryzanowska and the thirty five years of refinement and experience from Amy Taylor Alpers and Rachel Taylor Segel.

Because our method emphasizes depth, clarity, breath and uniform development, we begin all clients with the foundational work. Although we offer thoughtful modifications for postpartum clients, athletes, older adults, hypermobile movers or those who feel anxious, our intention remains consistent. Everyone is welcomed into the same method and the same long-term potential.

Using Springs and Equipment Feedback

The equipment is one of Pilates’ greatest teachers. Springs, straps and surfaces offer feedback that helps beginners understand movement without overthinking.

During every beginner-level class, the teacher guides all spring choices and safety decisions. Therefore, new clients do not need to understand tension (ie. springs), configurations or adjustments right away. Over time, students naturally begin to sense how the equipment supports their progression.

The Importance of Choosing the “Right” First Class

The ideal starting point varies. Some beginners quickly relax into the rhythm of the Reformer. Others discover confidence through the stability of Mat or Tower. In contrast, certain clients thrive on the challenge and clarity of the Chair.

Rather than searching for the perfect apparatus on day one, it is more important to begin. Progress develops through consistency, not through the specific equipment you choose at the start.

Common Misconceptions About Where to Start

New clients often share beliefs like:

  • “Reformer must be easier because I am lying down.”
  • “Mat is only for advanced students.”
  • “Chair is too difficult for beginners.”

However, learning Pilates is similar to learning a new language. Each piece of equipment introduces vocabulary in its own way. Mat and Tower offer stable surfaces with fewer moving parts. Reformer and Chair introduce additional elements that may take time to understand, yet they remain equally valuable for beginners.

The Benefits of a Mixed Equipment Class

Mixed-equipment classes, called Beginner Pilates, allow teachers to choose exactly what the group needs on any given day. Consequently, instead of learning one apparatus in isolation, students begin to see how the entire Classical Pilates system fits together.

This approach deepens understanding, prevents overuse and supports more balanced progress.

How Beginners Know When to Try Something New

Beginners can explore new apparatus as soon as they feel comfortable, curious or ready for variety. Because the system is interconnected, improving on one apparatus strengthens your work on all others. Tower informs Reformer. Mat informs Chair. Everything supports everything.

The goal is not to remain with one piece. Instead, the goal is to grow through the full method.
